Fashion Archive Tour with Charlene Gross, Director of the School of Theatre Fashion Archive and Associate Professor of Costume Design

With approximately 3,000 items, the School of Theatre Fashion Archive features an array of clothing and other ephemera of fashion acquired primarily through donations and a small holding at the Palmer Museum of Art from as early as the 1850s to the present. This hands-on collection was established in the early 2000s by Suzie Elder (retired) and is used by students, faculty, and staff to study the historical significance, cultural heritage, and technical specifications for designing and producing historically accurate costumes. A project to inventory and photograph the collection began in 2022 in collaboration with the Center for Virtual/Material Studies. Visit the online collection to see the ongoing collaborative work here.

We will visit the School of Theatre Archive, explain our ongoing work, talk about our collaborations with groups across Penn State, and examine a few pieces from the collection.

200 Acres Tour with CPA with Amy Dupain Vashaw, Audience and Program Coordinator

“You are the theater, you are the art, you make the experience,” artist Marike Splint says.

200 Acres, a reference to the tract of land that Penn State first occupied, is a walking-tour app that tests users’ knowledge by providing fresh perspectives on the university’s original land, history, and purpose. The artist’s narration leads users past historic architecture, shares rich histories of some species of trees, reflects on family togetherness, and muses on the Penn State milking barns and mountain views.

The app’s self-guided one-mile tour leads the user on an introspective, prompted walk along an accessible route, leaving from the patio of Eisenhower Auditorium and ending at The Arboretum at Penn State. The user wears headphones connected to the 200 Acres app on one’s smartphone. Each person will help to guide their own tour, as the user’s location and movements will conjure the sound and text being heard.

For more details and to watch an informational video, visit 200acreswalk.com.

Meet under the awning at the Eisenhower Auditorium patio

The course will focus on breath and stretch, coordination, mind-body connection, fight/flight response, multiple forms of martial arts, SAFD and stunt technique. Movement training, at its best, is both an exploration of creative possibilities and a specific connection to the craft of acting. Self-defense training at its best gives the participant the confidence, skills, and ability to effectively defend himself/herself/themself in a dangerous situation. Objectives may change depending upon the needs of the class. All bodies and abilities are welcome here. We will have a wrap up discussion and Q/A about basic safety.
